IH SOCCER COACHING REMINDERS

We want to thank you all again for the support you are providing to the community and families as In-House Soccer coaches.

In the spirit of competition, please consider these basic principles:
Soccer is fun!  If their is a field full of smiling children at the end of practice and the end of a game, you have successfully met the most important goal of coaching!

Safety First  Soccer is a sport in which there is inherent physical contact.  Be aware that this is not a zero contact sport.  But in the same light, use your best judgement to exercise safety.  Players should not be kicking when goalies have control of the ball.  Players should not play the ball when they are on the ground.  And rules of the game do not allow for pushing with hands or elbows.

Puppet coaching isn't any fun  Puppet Coaching is when coaches stand on the sideline yelling what each player should do on the field..."PASS TO JENNY", "SHOOT", "DRIBBLE"!  This is by far the hardest principle for coaches, but also the one which we get the most complaints.  In games, players respond better to encouragement, not direction.  As coaches, our tendency is to shout instruction from the sideline.  In perspective, this behavior is equivalent to your boss standing outside your cube yelling direction on how to type an email...yuch!  Soccer is a game of creativity, not set plays.  So, feel free to let the players exercise some creativity and make mistakes.  Here are a couple of tools to help teach in game situations:
    a) Spend time before the game practicing a specific skill, or tactic.  Then, encourage this behavior in the game....to players on the sideline.
    b) Use a special word that helps the players remember the special skill.  For examplee, if your day's skill is to spread-out, let them know the secret word is Superman.  You will get giggles when you yell "SUPERMAN" across the field.
    c) Before sending players into the game, give them a goal to work on.
    d) Provide player feedback and direction when they are on the sideline during a substitution.
    e) Teams perform better under shouts of encouragement, rather than commands....you'll be surprised by this result.

Players Thrive on Positive and Healthy Language and Volume  Kids are easily intimidated.  Keep your language and attitude positive and volume in-check.  Many kids get easily intimidated by over-powering authority figures.  Please watch your volume and intensity on the sideline.

Treat all players equally  Your role is not to "coach to win", but to "coach to teach".  You are a role model for both your team, and the opponent.  Feel free to encourage players from both teams by complementing their successes!

Thank you once again for your time and commitment!
